Field Hockey (13-7, 5-2) Completes Season with Penalty-Stroke Loss in ECAC Tournament

The Wheaton College field hockey team's season came to an end on Friday, as the fourth-seeded Lyons fell against number five Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 2-1 following a 5-4 penalty-stroke shootout defeat in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.

In a contest whose regulation and overtime periods, as well as the first seven penalty-stroke attempts for each team, were played on Wednesday in Norton, the remainder of the 10-shot shootout was completed on Friday at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. The Lyons finished with a 9-7 edge in shots and a 17-9 advantage in penalty corners, and the hosts rallied to knot the game in the 56th minute when freshman Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) tipped home junior Alisa Ardito's (Branford, CT/Branford) pass. Freshman back Ashley English's (Watertown, MA/Watertown) second-half defensive save kept the game tied. During strokes, Ardito and senior Ashley Miller (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) tallied on Wheaton's first two shots to make it 2-1, but the Lyons missed their next five attempts, and the Monks made three straight late in the shootout to clinch the win. Freshman keeper Cameron Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) made five saves.

The Lyons' 56 goals this fall fell just short of the 2006 team's school record of 59. Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) completed her career first at Wheaton in points (104) and assists (26) and second in goals (39). Senior Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) finished third in points (71) and goals (27) and fifth in helpers (17). Ardito enters her senior year second in assists (22), fourth in points (66) and tied for fourth in goals (22). Dimick's 11 assists matched her own single-season program record, her 43 points are the third-highest total in program history, and she's fourth with 16 goals. Ardito's nine assists are fifth in a season, and she's sixth with 27 points. Abel's 13 wins matched Maribeth Burke's '87 program rookie record set in 1983, and Abel tied for second overall in single-season wins.

Men's Soccer (13-7-3, 4-1-1) Wins NCAA Tournament Opener, Falls in Second Round

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is ranked eighth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), downed visiting Bridgewater State College, 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday before suffering a 5-0 setback at Middlebury College in Saturday's second round. The Lyons completed their season by making an NCAA Tournament appearance for the eighth time in 11 years.

Against Bridgewater State, senior Trevor Cote (Portsmouth, RI/Providence Country Day School) tallied the game-winner and assisted an insurance marker during his final home game. In the 36th minute, Cote sent in a rebound of freshman Josh Solomon's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) shot for the eventual winning goal. In the 77th minute, Cote headed freshman Jake Wagner's (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) long throw-in to first-year David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway), who tapped the ball in from the doorstep. Freshman Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) recorded his third consecutive shutout behind three saves.

Middlebury became just the second team since 1996 to score five goals against the Lyons, as the hosts held a 31-6 advantage in shots and tallied the winning marker in the fifth minute of play. Davidson finished with a season-high nine saves versus a team tied for 11th nationally and second in the region.

Wheaton had a double-digit win total for the 16th straight fall, and for the 17th time in the program's 19-year history. Eight players accounted for 13 game-winning goals. Freshmen not only contributed on the defensive end, as three keepers combined to play every second this season, but the first-year class carried the offensive load, as well. Of Wheaton's 45 goals and 50 assists, 28 goals (62%) and 34 assists (68%) were recorded by freshmen, as the class set a program mark for freshman helpers. Senior Jim Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) played the fifth-most games (83) in program history.

Davidson Draws NEWMAC's Final Player-of-the-Week Honor of 2007 Season

Davidson was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, November 4, earning the league's final award for the 2007 campaign. Davidson helped top-seeded Wheaton capture its seventh NEWMAC Tournament title in 10 seasons by posting two shutouts. He notched two saves during a 2-0 win over number four Clark University in a November 3 semifinal, and Davidson turned aside five shots in Wheaton's 4-0 victory the next day against Babson College in the final. Versus NEWMAC teams this year, Davidson went 5-1-1 with a 0.69 goals against average, .853 save percentage and three shutouts.

Women's Soccer (22-1-1, 9-0) Splits Pair in NCAA Tournament, Season Comes to End

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked seventh nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), downed Baptist Bible College, 9-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday before falling to Ithaca College, 1-0 in Saturday's second round. The Lyons made their eighth straight NCAA appearance.

Senior back Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) tied a school record with four assists and was one short of matching an NCAA Tournament mark, and the Lyons came within two goals of the NCAA Tournament record during their victory over visiting Baptist Bible. Freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) converted classmate Emily Hough's (Norwich, VT/Hanover) seventh-minute helper for the eventual winner. Davis, who tied a record by upping her career total in the NCAA Tournament to seven assists, tallied in the 13th minute before assisting four straight goals. Classmate Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) scored twice during that stretch, while junior Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) and freshman Colleen Liffers (Merrimac, MA/Pentucket Regional) each tallied. Brack provided a helper on first-year back Alessia Viscomi's (Newton, MA/Newton North) marker in the 41st minute, while junior Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX/Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) scored with 24 seconds left in the opening stanza to make it 8-0 at halftime. By then, the Lyons held advantages of 24-0 in shots and 10-0 in corner kicks. Wheaton took only six shots in the second frame, as sophomore Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) tallied with 3:08 remaining. Senior keepers Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) and Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) each went untested in one half of work as the Lyons held a 30-2 advantage in shots.

Wheaton saw its undefeated season come to an end against visiting Ithaca, as the Bombers scored in the 41st minute. The Lyons held a 21-9 advantage in shots but were unable to tally the equalizer. Cockburn made one save in the first half, as her two-year record at Wheaton slipped to 17-1, while Kronenberg stopped two second-half shots. The 19-game winning streak the Blue and White carried into the contest was one game short of the team's 2001 program record, and its 23-contest unbeaten streak was two games shy of the 2004 squad's mark.

Senior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) finished her career fifth at Wheaton in points (118), tied for fifth in goals (42) and sixth in assists (34). Classmate Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) is fifth in assists (35), tied for sixth in points (107) and is seventh in goals (36). She also came within two games of becoming the second Lyon to ever appear in 100. Davis placed seventh in assists (32). Senior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) tied for ninth in assists (30) and is 10th in points (68). Kronenberg is first in shutouts (28) and third in victories (56).

Wheaton finished the season by outscoring opponents, 98-9 with 16 shutouts, as the Lyons were within one win and four goals of tying school records, and their clean sheet total was fifth all time. Alvarez set the program's freshman record with 23 goals, becoming just the second Lyon to score that many, and the total places her 10th in Wheaton history for career markers. Alvarez is also the third player in program history to tally 50 points in a season. Davis tied for third with 14 assists this year, while Hough tied for ninth in points (40) and tied for 10th in assists (12).

Hough Receives NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week Honor

Hough earned NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week laurels for the week ending on Sunday, November 4, as the league awarded the honor for the final time this season. Hough helped top-seeded Wheaton corral its seventh NEWMAC Tournament crown in eight seasons, first by scoring an insurance marker during the Lyons' 2-0 semifinal victory over number four Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on November 3. During the following day's championship game, Hough tallied the winner in a 5-0 victory against number three Babson College, sending home a sixth-minute goal before assisting Wheaton's fourth goal in the 62nd minute.

Men's (2-3) and Women's (4-1) Swimming Travel to New York City for Double-Dual Meet

The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled for a double-dual meet at New York University on Saturday, as the women knocked off NEWMAC counterpart United States Coast Guard Academy, 190.5-107.5 but fell to the host Violets, 220-80. Wheaton's men lost to the two-time defending league champion Bears, 249-35 and dropped a 217-61 decision against NYU.

A trio of Wheaton women won events, as sophomore Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) was the top finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) captured the 100-yard freestyle, and classmate Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke. Senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) turned in the men's top showing, finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke.
