298. Experimental Course
History of Archaeology
This course will span the period from archaeology's early, antiquarian origins of collecting materials (some would say treasure hunting) to its high-tech present. Students will learn how the rediscovered interest in the Classical world during the early Renaissance ultimately led to the first excavations, and progressed to an increased professionalism of the field. The class will cover the major men and women in the history of archaeology, the importance of the Enlightenment and the Darwinian revolution, the most influential sites, the impact of other scientific fields, and changes in theoretical paradigms.
