Background
The University of Texas Trombone Choir was founded in the fall of 1977 by UT professor emeritus, Donald Knaub. The group performs a wide variety of repertoire from Bach to the Beetles, traditional jazz, and sacred music. As a testament to the group's artistry, the UT Trombone Choir was featured at the 2004 Brazilian Trombone Festival (Porto Alegre), the 2002 Eastern Trombone Workshop (Washington DC), and was named winner of the 2002 Emory Remington International Trombone Choir Competition. During their 2004 Brazilian tour, they performed before a standing-room -only crowd at Igreja da Candelaria (Rio de Janeirio's oldest and most important cathedral) and were featured on Progamo do Jo (a Sao Paulo-based production that is South America's most popular TV talk show). The UT Austin Jazz Bones, a subset of the trombone choir program, were named winners of the 2001 International Trombone Association's Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition, and presented a spotlight concert at the 2001 International Trombone Festival in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Brazilian Trombone Ensemble is a group of six Brazilian trombone players, a percussionist and ocassional guests. The idea of organizing the ensemble was born during the national trombone meeting of the Brazilian Trombone Association, in February of 2001, when the Paraíba Trombone Quartet (Sandoval Moreno de Oliveira, Roberto Ângelo Sabino, Gilvando Pereira da Silva e Stanley Bernardo da Silva), Radegundis Feitosa Nunes e Renato Farias Leite da Silva got together to play some trombone sextets. At that point all these trombone players where involved, together with Professor Gilberto Gagliardi, on a project to qualify and promote the GG line trombones made by WERIL (Brazilian manufacturer). The musical affinity plus the idea of promoting the instrument and its traditional and contemporary Music repertory, including a special attention to the so rarely played Brazilian Music Repertory on the instrument, seemed to be shared by all members of the ensemble who started immediately working on the searching of the already existing pieces for this kind of group and also promoting the commissioning of new ones, some of which are recorded on the two CDs of the ensemble (DESAFIOS/CHALENGE and A LITTLE BIT OF BRAZIL). The CDs were released successfully at the International Trombone Festivals (ITFs) in Helsinki-Finland (2003) and Ithaca-N.Y., USA (2004), respectively. The Ensemble has been successful playing concerts and teaching master classes in musical events in Brazil, on Radio, Journals and TV interviews, such as the "Programa do Jo", a Brazilian famous talk show transmitted internationally by Globo and CBN TV stations and also as invited artists/faculty of Music Festivals such as the ITFs in Denton TX, USA (2002), Helsinki-Finland (2003) and Ithaca-N.Y, USA (2004).
