Recommended Text Editors
It is very important that you use the right kind of editor when transcribing and encoding a document. Most word processors (e.g. Microsoft Word) embed hidden proprietary codes in the text as you type -- codes which cannot be used on other platforms and which are difficult to remove. You will, therefore, want to use either a basic "bare bones" text editor or a text editor designed specifically for encoding with XML. Most of your encoding and validation, should be done in the Library's Electronic Classroom using oXygen. However, you can perform some of this (with limited functionality) on your own computer as well. Below are some free editors that you can use for this project. The active links bring you to sites where the editors can be downloaded and installed on your computer for free. |

| NotePad | This is can be found on all Windows computers. You access it through Start->All programs->Accessories. | ||
| NoteTab | If you want more functionality than NotePad on a Windows machine with your text editor, NoteTab is the way to go. Unfortunately this is a Windows-only application, and you have to download and install it on your machine. | ||
| TextWrangler | This is a Mac-only editor and very good at creating text files. It replaces BBEdit Lite (see below), but requires at least 10.3.5 to run. | ||
| jEdit | Sometimes this application is a little slow to start, but for the most part this a reliable bare bones text editor. An advantage of this editor is that it can be used on a Mac or a Windows machine. | ||
| BBEdit Lite | This used to be Bare Bones Software's free text editor. Unfortunately, it is no longer updated or supported by BareBones software. I have found that it still functions well under OSX, though, regardless of the version you are using. This may change under 10.4. | ||
| Arachnophilia | This is a cross-platform HTML editor. However, it can also be used to create straight text files. It runs a little on the slow side, but can be used on both Windows and in OSX. | ||
