Who may use the Wallace Library?

The Wallace Library exists to support the educational mission of Wheaton College and the curricular needs of the Wheaton community. Precedence will be given to members of the Wheaton College community in the use of all library facilities and resources at all times.

Visitors are asked to abide by visitor policies and sign the Visitor's Registration Log located in the library foyer. After 10pm, the Wallace Library is open only to members of the Wheaton Community.

Borrowing privileges are extended to the following groups:

The Wheaton Community:
The Wheaton Community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i.

HELIN Consortium:
HELIN Consortium members including faculty, students and staff from Bryant University, Brown University, CCRI, Johnson and Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, University of Rhode Island and fifteen R.I. health sciences libraries. HELIN members must present a valid college or university ID at the Circulation Desk.

SMCL Consortium:
SMCL Consortium members, including the students and faculty
of Bridgewater State College, Stonehill College, and the University
of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. SMCL members must present a valid college or university I.D. at the Circulation Desk.

Teachers and Administrators:
Teachers and administrators from area schools who host Wheaton
students in their teaching practicum may borrow materials from Wheaton collections.

Norton Residents -- Borrowing privileges are extended to Norton residents who are 18 years of age or older for an annual fee of $20.00. A registration form is available at the Circulation Desk. A limit of 10 books from Wheaton's collection may be borrowed for a period of 4 weeks.

Other Area Residents -- Borrowing privileges are extended to other area residents who are 18 years of age or older for an annual fee of
$40.00. A registration form is available at the Circulation Desk. A limit of 10 books from Wheaton's collection may be borrowed for a period of 4 weeks.


Wheaton ID Card

The Wheaton ID card serves as a library card for students, faculty and staff of the College. The 14-digit barcode number on the back of your ID is required to check out materials, to view your patron record, renew materials online and to borrow from other HELIN libraries. Your library barcode is also required to access online resources from off campus.

Circulation Loan Periods

Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out to their account. Please promptly return all items when they are due.

*Please note that library privileges will be blocked when videos are not returned within seven days. Replacement charges in the amount of $45.00 plus a $5.00 processing fee will be sent to Student Financial Services for videos that are damaged or not returned.

Wheaton Honors Thesis Students

The library supports honors thesis students by giving them an extended borrowing period. A list of honors candidates is forwarded to the library in mid-September. Wheaton books checked out after the honors candidate list is issued will be due the last day of final exams. Books checked out from HELIN libraries or on Interlibrary Loan will not have the extended borrowing period.
There are a number of study carrels that can be reserved by students who are working on an honors thesis. Carrels will be assigned first come, first served. To reserve a study carrel please complete the Study Carrel Agreement Form and deliver it to the Circulation Desk.

Renewals

Books and other circulating material may be renewed as long as they have not been requested by another patron. From the library homepage: http://www.wheatoncollege.edu/library/home.html, click on the link in the yellow sidebar titled "My Library Record". For assistance please call ext. 8224.

Recalls

All checked-out items are subject to recall after a loan period of two weeks. You may request a recall at the Circulation Desk. As soon as the material is returned, you will be notified that it is being held for you at the Circulation Desk. All items needed for course reserve are subject to recall at any time.

Holds

A hold can be placed on materials currently checked out to another patron. You will need your library barcode to place the request. When the item is returned, you will be notified that the item is being held for you at the Circulation Desk. For assistance please ask at the Circulation Desk or the Information Desk.

Items not found on the shelf

Patrons who cannot locate an item on the shelf may fill out an item search request at the Circulation Desk. The staff will check the stacks at regular intervals and will notify the patron of the results of the search. Items that cannot be located are reported to our Acquisitions department for reorder. If a patron needs a missing item immediately and it is not available at another HELIN library s/he may place an Interlibrary Loan request for the missing item.

Returning Library materials

Please promptly return all library materials when they are due. All library materials (including HELIN and InRhode books) can be returned at the Circulation Desk. When the library is closed there is a book return located inside the first set of doors on the right.

Fines, Notices and Bills

Courtesy Notices

In an effort to help patrons avoid fines and replacement charges, courtesy notices will be emailed when materials are coming due.

Fines

Fines are assessed according to the policies of each HELIN library. Be sure to understand the borrowing policies for the items you borrow from HELIN libraries. Wheaton faculty, students and staff are personally responsible for fines charged to your account. Fines must be paid directly to the lending HELIN library.

Overdue Notices

Overdue notices are sent when materials are overdue.

FIRST NOTICE is sent seven days after due date of material not returned.

SECOND NOTICE: sent seven days after the first notice

THIRD NOTICE: mailed seven days after the second notice.

Replacement Fees for Lost Material

A replacement fee of $45.00 and a $5.00 processing fee will be charged for all Wheaton materials that are not returned. Replacement fees at other HELIN libraries may be as high as $100.00/book. Borrowers of materials from other HELIN libraries will be personally responsible for any charges on their account. Replacement charges for lost or damaged books must be paid directly to the HELIN lending library.

Course Reserve

Reserves

Course reserve material is available at the Circulation Desk. Reserve items may be borrowed for two hours or three days, depending on the material selected using your Wheaton ID. Unless specifically indicated by the faculty member, 2-hour reserve material cannot leave the premises.

Media

Video Collection

The Video Collection is kept at the Circulation Desk. The Library provides facilities for in-house viewing. Videos are purchased to support the curriculum.

Audio Media Collection

The collection of CDs, cassettes, and spoken CDs are located in locked cabinets on the stack level outside the Music Seminar Room. To browse this collection please ask at the Circulation Desk. Listening facilities are available in the Library.

Books on Tape

A collection of Books on Tape are available at the Circulation Desk.

Laptops

The library has 6 Dell Latitude D630 laptops available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Wheaton students with a valid Wheaton college ID may borrow laptops for use within the facility.

Food and Drink Policy

To provide a comfortable, inviting study atmosphere for all library users,
the Library staff and college custodians ask that you respect those around you and protect library property.

-Drinks must be in spill-proof containers
-Clean up after yourself
-Report spills immediately to library staff

Cell Phone Policy

Patrons are asked to turn off cell phone ringers when entering the Wallace Library. Patrons placing or receiving a call are asked to do so in one of the following areas:

  • near the elevators on each level
  • outside the library entrance
