Epic Brass summer institute to be held at Wheaton

April 11, 2001

The Epic Brass Summer Institute, hosted by Earl Raney and the Epic Brass Quintet, will be held at Wheaton College on Tuesday, June 26th through Friday, June 29, 2001. The Institute will come to a close on Saturday, June 30 at 8:00 pm with a gala finale concert featuring Epic Brass, and the Institute quintets and brass ensembles in Cole Memorial Chapel on Wheaton College campus.

The Institute is open to brass players from middle school through high school age as well as adults. The Institute is set up as an intensive, four-day camp to teach and refine techniques and confidence as members of trios, quartets, and quintets set up by the director and members of the Epic Brass Quintet. Technique master classes and group lessons will be taught to give stronger foundations toward playing everything from baroque and classical to twentieth century and jazz.

During performance class, Institute quintets will perform for each other and receive coaching from all five Epic Brass members on ensemble, intonation, tone, rhythm, musicality, stage presence, and communicating your art more effectively to an audience.

Founded in 1983, Earl Raney[base ']s Epic Brass Quintet is one of the most dynamic chamber music groups on the concert stage today. Since winning the prestigious Alliance Auditions (Northeast Chamber Music Competition) in 1986, the quintet has blazed a trail across forty-six states with performances at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Ambassador Auditorium. Internationally, the group has appeared in Canada, Bermuda, Austria, Germany, France, England, Scotland, Poland, and most recently, the Far East. The quintet is praised for its richly varied repertoire spanning Renaissance to twentieth-century compositions, blending serious artistic interpretation with light-hearted entertainment.

Epic Brass members are also talented arrangers who supply a constant array of original and innovative pieces to the group[base ']s eclectic performances. Experienced educators, Epic Brass members have presented over 1500 concerts, master classes, and clinics for musicians at high schools, colleges, and universities across the country, most recently the University of Wisconsin, Middle Tennessee State University, Lee University, Stonehill College, and the University of Rhode Island.
