Message to the Wheaton community

September 11, 2001

To all concerned parents and friends of Wheaton:

Please know that everyone here is safe, and the community is supporting those who have reason to be concerned for relatives and friends who may be affected by these terrible and unprecedented attacks. We are also assuring the ongoing safety of our community here, and taking steps to assure the safety of those students who may not be on campus.

With the attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington we are in the midst of an unprecedented national tragedy. As details unfold, we will stay on top of it. There are TV monitors throughout the Balfour Hood Center.

In the meantime, let us support each other, lay no blame, and remember to be compassionate with ourselves and others. We know that there will be many among us with family and friends in areas where these explosions have occurred. The Counseling Center, area coordinators, and student life staff are available if you need to talk to someone. For now, classes will continue as scheduled. We urge all students to remain on campus until the situation becomes more clear.

We will gather at the Dimple at 4 pm today to share what we know and to support each other individually and as a community.

Susanne Woods, Provost
Sue Alexander, Dean of Students
