Seatbelts Do Save Lives

Submitted by Officer Della Grotta
Wheaton College Public Safety Department

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in all age groups. Nearly every hour someone dies, because of not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt is the most effective way of saving lives. Being restrained can keep a person from being ejected from their vehicle. You are most likely to suffer severe injuries or death if unrestrained. Most motor vehicle collisions occur on short trips. A lot of people think they do not need to buckle up, but this is not a true statement at all. People just can not predict when an accident is going to occur.

Just Remember these Important Tips:

The driver and any other passengers will be fined if not buckled up, it's the law.

Reduce speed when getting to intersections where you can't see other vehicles awaiting their right of way.

Look both ways when stopped at an intersection and give yourself a few extra seconds before continuing. This will protect you and drivers that try to get through at the last minute.
