Women's hoops drops 63-59 non-conference decision at CurryNovember 22, 2006 MILTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's basketball team lost its final game before Thanksgiving break, dropping a 63-59 decision at Curry College's Miller Gymnasium on Wednesday. The Lyons and Colonels are now each 2-1. Curry scored the first six points of the game and took a 14-3 lead just 5:37 into the contest. After trailing by 10 at 29-19 with less than two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening half, the Lyons forged a 14-4 run to knot the score, 33-33, 2:47 into the second period. From there, the Colonels looked to regain control of the game, scoring the next eight points for a 41-33 lead with 15:28 remaining, but Wheaton began chipping away from the charity stripe. The visitors went 10-of-11 on free throws, hitting their first nine attempts, during an 18-9 run over an 8:45 span and took their first lead of the contest, 51-50, on junior Becky Aitchison's (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) freebie with 6:27 to go. The hosts went back up by as many as four points, but senior Kim McCormack (Milton, MA/Milton) came up big in consecutive possessions during a return to her hometown, hitting three straight free throws to give the Lyons a 59-57 edge at 1:55. However, Curry sophomore Christina Sancinito's (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield) three-point play with 1:31 left gave the Colonels the lead for good. Wheaton went 0-of-3 from the field the rest of the way, while Curry sophomore Sarah Walker (Colchester, VT/Colchester) iced the game by going 3-of-4 on free throws in the final 27 seconds. McCormack finished with a team-high 15 points, contributing an 11-of-14 effort from the charity stripe while converting the most free throws by a Lyon since February 2000. Freshman Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) scored 11 points, hitting all seven of her free throw attempts, and nabbed seven rebounds, while sophomore Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) tallied nine points and seven boards in 18 minutes. Wheaton shot 23-of-29 on free throws while hitting only 17 field goals. For Curry, Sancinito finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior Colleen Dunne (East Granby, CT/East Granby) tallied 16 points and knocked down all three of her three-point tries. Walker added nine points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a pair of blocks. The Lyons return to action next Tuesday against nationally-ranked Brandeis University and kick off a five-game homestand. Wheaton and the Judges, who are 16th in the USA TODAY ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, tip off in Emerson Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
