Lyons claim third place at Eastern Connecticut State Tip-Off Tournament, pick up 68-47 victory over Husson for first win of seasonNovember 18, 2007 WILLIMANTIC, CT- The Wheaton College women's basketball team notched its first victory of the season on Sunday by downing Husson College, 68-47 during the Eastern Connecticut State University Tip-Off Tournament third-place game at Geissler Gym. Senior Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) tallied 10 points and was named to the all-tournament team. After junior Krystin Hickey's (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) bucket 13 seconds into the contest put Wheaton on top, the Eagles scored twice in a 23-second span to take a 4-2 edge by the 17:56 mark of the opening half. However, sophomore Stephanie Michals (Fairfax, VA/Saint Stephen's & Saint Agnes School) converted a three-point play just 20 seconds later to give Wheaton a 5-4 advantage, and the Lyons led for the final 37:36 of the contest. With the Lyons holding on to a 13-11 lead with a little more than 13 minutes left before halftime, Wheaton embarked on a 15-0 run over a 7:58 span. Five players scored during that time, with sophomore Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) turning in the final three buckets to make the score 28-11 at 5:05. The Lyons maintained a 38-21 edge at intermission. Aitchison's jumper at 17:11 of the second stanza gave Wheaton its third 20-point advantage of the half, 47-27, as the Lyons led by at least 20 until a little more than a minute remained. Aitchison's hoop sparked a 13-2 run that gave the Blue and White the first of its two 29-point leads, as sophomore Callie Schneider's (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) lay-up at 12:39 staked Wheaton to a 58-29 advantage. Another Schneider bucket at 11:22 made it 60-31. The Lyons shot 50 percent for the game, going 30-of-60 from the field, as 11 players scored. Aitchison shot 4-of-7 in recording her 10 points while hitting two three-pointers and adding three assists and two steals. Sophomore Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) tallied 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting, while Hickey had 10 points, four rebounds, three helpers and two steals in 16 minutes. Kruse contributed eight points and six rebounds in 11 minutes, and sophomore Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) had six points and eight rebounds. Junior Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) notched five assists without committing a turnover. Junior Jenny Rollins (Corinth, ME/Central) finished with 11 points to lead Husson, which shot 34 percent from the field. Freshman Kelsey Lavertu (Howland, ME/Penobscot Valley) added six points, while 11 other Eagles had at least two points.
