Lyon women roll to 78-48 victory over Curry in home openerNovember 28, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's basketball team had four players in double-figure scoring Wednesday night against non-conference foe Curry College, as the Lyons posted a 78-48 triumph during their home opener in Emerson Gymnasium. Wheaton is now 2-1 on the young season, while the Colonels remain winless through four games. Four different Lyons landed in the scoring column through the opening five minutes to help give the hosts a 10-4 advantage. After the two squads traded five baskets apiece to make it 20-14 with 9:06 remaining, Colonel junior Emma Dickson (North Yarmouth, ME/Greely) and Wheaton junior Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) exchanged threes to keep the gap at six at 6:27. The Lyons went on a 13-2 run over 3:45 to hold their largest first-half lead at 38-22 with 23 ticks on the clock. Junior Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) and sophomore Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) combined for nine markers in the run as Wheaton knocked down its final five shots of the stanza to up its half percentage to 60.0. Pleat completed the frame with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, while Champney went 4-of-6 for 10 points to go alongside six boards. Curry made 37.9 percent of its attempts and converted just 1-of-8 from the free throw line. The Lyons continued their hot shooting in the second half, draining three straight buckets for a total of eight consecutive since the 4:08 mark of the first frame, for a commanding 44-24 advantage. Wheaton scored 13 of the half's first 15 points to hold a 51-26 lead just three minutes in and led by as much as 30 twice, capitalizing on points off turnovers with a 28-10 edge. The Blue and White turned in the program's ninth-best shooting performance at 55.6 percent while also making half of its 14 three-point attempts. Lyon senior Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with eight assists. Champney recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-best 16 points by going 7-of-11 from the field and 10 rebounds. Junior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) contributed 14 points and five boards, while Pleat finished with 11 points. Sophomore Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) handed out a career-high-tying five assists. Junior Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield) was the lone Curry player in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Sophomore Liz Forte (Rutland, VT/Mount Saint Joseph Academy) registered seven points, and freshman Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA/Brockton) added team highs of five rebounds and five assists.
