Hickey named NEWMAC Player of the Week for second time in career

January 14, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's basketball standout Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) drew the second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week honor of her career for the week ending on Sunday, January 13. The junior also earned the accolade last January 15.

Hickey helped Wheaton begin its NEWMAC slate by going 2-0 last week. The forward averaged 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 61.1 percent (11-18) from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and canning all seven free throw tries.

During a 67-48 win at Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday, Hickey had game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-of-12 while hitting both of her three-point attempts and all five free throw tries. She added three assists. Hickey then had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 27 minutes of a 70-50 win against visiting Babson College on Saturday.

Hickey leads Wheaton in scoring average (14.4) and three-point percentage (.520), as she has hit 13-of-25 long-range tries. She is second in field goal (.515) and free throw (.800) shooting and rebounding (5.4) while placing third in each assists (36) and steals (17). With 961 career points in 68 games, Hickey is 10th on Wheaton's career scoring list, standing 39 points short of 1,000, a plateau no Lyon junior has reached. She is also ninth in field goals with 372.

Hickey has helped the NEWMAC's most potent offense, which averages 68.2 points, by pacing the league in three-point shooting, tying for third in free throw percentage, placing fourth in both scoring average and field goal shooting, and sitting seventh in assists.

Meanwhile, her team also paces the NEWMAC in scoring margin (+11.5), free throw shooting (.743), assists per game (17.23), steals per game (10.77) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.97). The Lyons also have the best three-point defense, holding opponents to 20.9 percent shooting, and are second in each field goal percentage (.424), blocks per game (3.62) and turnover margin (+4.92).

At 9-4, Wheaton is off to its best 13-game start since 1994-95 and is one of two teams tied atop the 10-team NEWMAC standings. The Lyons host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the second contest of a four-game homestand.
