Balanced scoring attack pushes Wesleyan women past host Wheaton, 18-7April 22, 2008 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team saw visiting Wesleyan University score Tuesday's non-conference game's first five goals and didn't recover, as the Lyons fell to the Cardinals, 18-7 on Keefe Field. Today's game was rescheduled from its original date of March 20 due to unplayable field conditions. Wheaton finishes its regular season at 7-9, while the Cardinals snapped a five-game losing skid to improve to 6-8. Wesleyan used a balanced scoring attack in victory, with three players notching a hat trick, three others tallying twice and eight different Cardinals assisting on goals. Senior Sophia Kim (Annapolis, MD/Key School), who gave the visitors a 1-0 edge 1:14 into play, junior Laurel Sticklor (Boxford, MA/Phillips Academy) and freshman Claire Hunter (Ivy, VA/Saint Anne's-Belfield School) scored three times each. Wesleyan held a 5-0 lead by 17:34 of the opening half and a 6-1 edge at 15:29, converting on its first four free-position chances. With Wheaton trailing 8-1 with less than 10 minutes to go before the break, senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) found the back of the net at 9:43 for the first of her three goals on the day. Dimick's marker with 47.3 ticks on the clock again brought the hosts to within six at 9-3, but Sticklor tallied for the third time with 5.1 seconds remaining for a 10-3 Cardinal advantage at the half. Dimick cut the Lyon deficit to 10-4 nearly a minute into the second stanza, but Wesleyan answered with three straight goals in 2:22 for a comfortable 13-4 lead. Goals from Wheaton junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and sophomore Hanna Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) 2:51 apart made it 13-6 before another 3-0 Cardinal run pushed the margin to 10 goals at 8:33. Aside from Dimick's hat trick, Grant finished with two goals, while Landis and junior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) rounded out the scoring. Senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) assisted once, and freshman goalie Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made six saves in defeat. In addition to Wesleyan's three-goal scorers, junior Sarah Orkin (West Hartford, CT/Hall), sophomore Charlotte Hastings (Taftsville, VT/Kimball Union Academy) and freshman Jess Chukwu (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) posted two goals apiece, while classmate Allie Lynch (Greenwich, CT/Rye Country Day School) totaled one goal and two assists. Junior Rachel Stemerman (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) picked up the win after stopping four first-half shots as the first of three goalies. Wheaton takes the weekend off from competition and will resume play next Wednesday for the opening round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at 4:30 p.m. Pairings will be announced on Saturday following the completion of the remaining three regular season league games.
