Three Wheaton track and field athletes earn national academic honors, both men's and women's squads draw accolades from USTFCCCA

July 24, 2008

NORTON, MA- A trio of Wheaton College track and field athletes earned academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while each the men's and women's programs qualified for an academic accolade.

Recent graduate Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and rising senior Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) were among 232 women from Division III to land on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, while returning junior Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) was one of 158 men to place on the squad. To qualify, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and met an NCAA Championship automatic or provisional qualifying standard during the indoor or outdoor season.

Brousseau and Calderwood each competed at the indoor NCAA Championship in the distance medley relay, while Brousseau also ran the mile. She later provisionally qualified for the 1,500-meter run during the outdoor season. Ibric, a 2007 All-America finisher in the indoor 400-meter dash, met provisional qualification in the event for this year's indoor meet.

With a 3.06 cumulative GPA, the Wheaton men's team was one of 56 Division III programs to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic status, while the women were among 92 squads honored thanks to their 3.14 GPA. To be nominated, a team must carry a minimum 3.00 GPA, with the top award going to the program that had the combination of best GPA and overall finish at the indoor or outdoor NCAA championships.
