College Year in Athens Program

Profile: Established in 1962, College Year in Athens (CYA), in association with the International Center for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies (DIKEMES) invites students to expand their knowledge and understanding of Greece's fundamental contribution to the development of civilization. Instruction takes place in the classroom and the sites of historical significance throughout the country.
Since it‚s establishment, over 5,000 students from more than 370 North American colleges and universities have studied at College Year in Athens. With a student to faculty ratio of 7:1 and an average class size of 19, CYA is a good fit for students from small liberal arts institutions. An estimated 140 students participate per year.

Location: The College Year in Athens Academic Center is located in the heart of Athens, next to the Athens Marble Stadium opposite the National Gardens. Students live in apartments in the residential neighborhoods of Kolonaki and Pangrati.

Duration: Academic Year, Fall, or Spring semesters

Program dates:
Fall semester 2009: August 31-December 18, 2009
Spring semester 2010: January 18-May 14, 2010

Courses & credit: Students take four or five courses per semester. Language courses meet for a total of sixty contact hours and are the equivalent of four semester credit hours; other courses meet for a total of forty-five contact hours, and are the equivalent of three semester hours. Students must take a total of 16 or 17 semester credit hours.

Admission requirements: Juniors or seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Housing & board: Students are housed in apartments located in the Kolonaki neighborhood of Athens, a particularly pleasant and safe residential area at the heart of Athens and at a twenty-minute walk from the Academic Center. Board includes a main meal Monday through Friday, except on holidays, recesses and field trips at the facilities located at the top floor of the Academic Center next to the Marble Stadium. Students will be billed for their board by CYA.

Fees: Wheaton Tuition & Housing. Expenses covered include tuition, apartment housing, orientation, field trips (as determined by CYA), Greek medical insurance (which does not replace supplemental study abroad insurance), and an ISIC card.

Other Expenses: Students are responsible for passport and visa fees, board (which covers lunch Monday ˆ Friday with the exception of holidays), meals in addition to what is covered by CYA board, round-trip airfare, Supplemental Study Abroad Insurance, and personal expenses.
