Profile: The University of Botswana (UB) was established in 1982, and currently has a student population of 15,000. The University's vision is to be a leading academic center of excellence in Africa and the world; while its' mission is to advance the intellectual and human resource capacity of the nation and the international community. The University's values recognize a commitment to students, academic freedom, academic integrity, cultural authenticity, and internationalism. The university has six faculties; Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences.
Location: Botswana is one of Africa's most stable countries, and a mulit-party democracy. It is unusual in that the majority of its population is from a single ethnic group, the Tswana. Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, has a population of over 250,000. It is one of Africa's fastest-growing cities and lies in southeastern Botswana, close to the border of South Africa. In addition to the main campus of the University of Botswana, Gaborone also hosts the headquarters of the 10 nation Southern African Development Community (SADC), which focuses on regional development, economic growth, and poverty alleviation. Botswana is known for its amazing biodiversity and diverse landscapes.
Duration: Academic Year, Fall, and Spring Semesters
Program dates:
Spring Semester (Semester 2)- January-May
Fall Semester (Semester 1)- August-November
Courses & credit: 5(15 UB Credits)courses= 4.0 Wheaton Credits (3 UB credits= 1 Wheaton Credit)
*Students must take the Setswana language course for beginners and it is recommended that students take intro to the culture of Botswana to help navigate outside of Garborone.
Admission requirements: Juniors with a minimum GPA of 2.85.
Housing & board: Students reside in University Halls with a meal plan.
Fees: Wheaton Comprehensive Fees. Expenses covered include tuition, room, and meals at the dining hall, round-trip airfare from Boston and an ISIC card.
Other Expenses: Students are responsible for passport and visa fees, round-trip airfare to meet the group flight, supplemental study abroad insurance, and personal expenses.
