Wheaton in South Africa
Rhodes University
Profile: Rhodes University was founded in 1904. It offers a wide range of majors at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. There are more than 30 majors offered through its six faculties, including commerce, education, humanities, law, pharmacy and science. A leading institution of higher education in South Africa, it attributes its excellence in part to its small size. There are nearly 4,000 students enrolled on the Grahamstown campus, and more than half live on campus. Rhodes University has a diverse student body that reflects the cosmopolitan nature of South African society.
Location: Nestled in the beautiful hills of the Eastern Cape, Grahamstown is located in a very significant place in South African history. It is where the British encountered Africans and were stopped in their northward conquest. Grahamstown presents in all of its dimensions the challenges and aspirations of a South Africa emerging from the dark era of apartheid and into a more hopeful democratic future. Known as the festival city, Grahamstown is home to the National Festival of Arts, SciFest and other important cultural activities. It is situated at the meeting point of four different climate zones and offers a year-round moderate climate. It is close to game parks, the beach, and within easy reach of surrounding towns and cities via excellent road and air connections. Many of the buildings of the campus are actually national monuments. Grahamstown and the Rhodes University campus offer an ideal environment to study, to have fun, and to be immersed in South African culture.
