Wheaton Library Joins the HELIN Consortium
What is HELIN?
HELIN is a local consortium of colleges and universities that shares a library catalog. HELIN includes Bryant University, Brown University, CCRI, Johnson and Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, University of Rhode Island, Wheaton College and fifteen R.I. health sciences libraries.
HELIN Help
The library staff is here to help make the transition to HELIN as smooth as possible. There are many ways to get more information, and ask questions about the library changes.
- Ask a librarian: Yes! You can talk to a LIVE person who can answer your questions and show you how to use the new HELIN catalog. Call the information desk at x3700, or call, email, or visit your library liaison.
- HELIN Help Guides: Print friendly, step by step instructions on how to do various tasks using the HELIN catalog
What this means to you
Below you'll find a list of the highlights. As always, if you have any additional questions or comments, you can contact your library liaison.
Search all member libraries
- The HELIN library catalog will allow you to locate materials in the collections of member libraries. (Approximately 4.8 million items!.)
- HELIN's appearance will be slightly different from ELIZAs. However, with only a few exceptions, you will be able to search for material in much the same way. You can also confine your search to a specific library, Wheaton's included. Exception: Brown University's JOSIAH catalog.
- You can search Brown University's library catalog, combined with those of the other HELIN members, by using the InRhode library catalog via direct links from HELIN and the Wheaton Library home page.
Borrow materials from other libraries
- You may use your Wheaton ID barcode number to request books and other circulating non-periodical items directly from the HELIN catalog. Items will arrive at the Wallace Library Circulation Desk within 2-3 days. For books not available through HELIN, continue to place your requests through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) using WorldCat, the "request books" link on the library homepage, or the request link within individual databases.
- Access to electronic and print journal articles and article borrowing procedures will not change. To request articles not owned by Wheaton (including those from journals owned by other HELIN members), continue to place your requests through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) using the "request articles" link on the library homepage, or the request link within individual databases.
- You will be responsible for all overdue fines and replacement charges [variable by library].
On-site privileges
- Faculty and students will have year-round, on-site borrowing privileges and access to the print and electronic resources of all academic member libraries, except Brown's, simply by showing their Wheaton ID to the appropriate staff. Several health sciences libraries require appointments.
- Brown University Libraries:
-- Faculty must have a Brown library card for on-site borrowing privileges and access to the print collections and electronic resources - see instructions below.
-- Students must justify their need to use the Brown University library collections on-site and obtain a "Letter of Introduction" from their liaison librarian, just as they have done in the past.
No more VPN
- When you are away from campus, access our electronic databases and online journals simply by using the library barcode numbers located on your Wheaton ID. The installation of Virtual Private Network (VPN) software will not be necessary.
What do you need to do next?
- If necessary, go to Public Safety for a new Wheaton ID with legible barcode number, followed by a visit to the Circulation Desk in the Wallace Library to update your record.
- Faculty: though you can continue to place orders for new material, the Acquisitions Department will stop placing orders on May 15th and begin placing them again in early August.
- If you intend to use Brown's libraries on-site, see below.
