Native People's Heritage Month

Native People's Heritage Month celebrates and honors the many cultures and contributions of the Indigenous People. Our schedule of events below is a mix educational with social, and includes pieces of Native/Indigenous art, literature, music, dance, history, spirituality, and the examination of Native identity and its intersection with other pieces of one's identity.

Bicultural Dine≠ (Navajo) Education Exhibit
Monday, November 5th- Friday, November 30th * Wallace Library

Artifacts and books illustrating traditional and western Dine' (Navajo) education, and a selection of circulating books from Native American authors and subjects.

Educating Four Generations of Navajo Women
Monday, November 5th * 7:00pm * Hindle Lecture, Science Center

Four Navajo women of the same family describe their changing educational experiences in two cultures, European American and Navajo. All continuously navigate among the cultures of northern Arizona. Reception to follow in the Library Stair Tower, Wallace Library.

Abenaki Ethnobotanist Judy Dow speaks on her efforts to protect a sacred land site from desecration by damaging waste products - a response to the contemporary problem of corporate "green-washing".

A Glimpse Into Indigenous Religious Cultures

A panel on Indigenous religious cultures presented by Professor Barbara Darling-Smith and friends.

Ke Kulana He Mahu: Remembering a Sense of Place

The story of a group of people, young and old, surviving stereotypes, indignation, homophobia, and marginalization in a land where the ancient culture once accepted them as part of society.

Traditional Lakota Medicine Bags
Wednesday, November 28th * 7:00pm * Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning

Join Tim Swallow, Black Elk of the Teton Lakota Band of Crazy Horse, and learn about traditional Lakota medicine bags. The first 10 people will be able to create and keep a bag of their own! All materials will be provided.


Presented by the Native Peoples Heritage Month Committee in collaboration with the Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning, Student Life, Wallace Library, The Alliance, EEECs Quad, Professor Price, Professor Darling-Smith, Senate Fund and Speaker Fund.
